Year 3 Maths Home Learning

Week 10

The link below takes you to the weekly maths challenges on BBC Bitesize.  We hope you are liking these problems so far and find them interesting to do.

As well as continuing to develop your understanding of telling the time, this week we are focusing on geometry.  This is an area of maths we haven’t covered specifically before in our home learning and we hope it will give you an opportunity to revise skills you have learnt previously and develop them further.

Challenge one:

Using the shape word mat below, identify as many 2D shapes as possible around your home.

Shape Word Mat

To learn more about 2D shapes, follow the link below.  It also looks at introducing you to the idea of polygons (2D shapes) and the difference between regular and irregular polygons.

Challenge two:

Using the powerpoint below, learn about the different properties of shape then use this understanding to help you to describe the properties of the following 2D shapes below.

Guess the shape

Equilateral triangle

  • Square
  • Oblong
  • Quadrilateral
  • Hexagon
  • Octagon
  • Pentagon
  • Circle

If you are unfamiliar with any of the shapes above or need to learn more about the vocabulary used to describe the properties of shape, you can use this website:

You could create a poster with drawings of these shapes with their properties to help remind you of all of the different polygons (2D shapes).

Challenge three:

Create a poster to explain the following terms linked with shape.

  • Regular polygon
  • Irregular polygon
  • Angle
  • Perpendicular line
  • Parallel lines
  • Horizontal line
  • Vertical line

If you need help thinking of a definition to explain each of the terms above, the Maths is Fun website will really help you out.
